Argumentaire

5 publications, more than 20,000 copies sold, THE reference book : complete, extensively researched, informative, exceptional illustrations ... this book deserved a box! Hieronymus Bosch, Van Eyck, the Master of Flémalle, Petrus Christus, Hugo Van der Goes or Gerard David and Hans Memling among others ... These artists of the Burgundian Netherlands of the 14th and 15th centuries were grouped under the name "Flemish Primitives" in the nineteenth century, in favor of a growing interest in the Ancients Masters among dealers and collectors. This book reveals the fabulous wealth of the painting's golden age, long ignored. Through the portrait of some 60 artists, it shows how their influence throughout Europe of the fifteenth century has deeply marked Western art. The book first provides a picture of the historical and cultural context, as it was decisive for the emergence of this new form of artistic expression. The technique of the painters is then carefully analyzed. It highlights the variety of interpretation of each artist dealing with specific topics and the specific issue of the perspective.   Roger Van Schoute is Professor at the Royal Institute of Art History and Archeology of Brussels, and Professor at the catholic University of Louvain.
